What is workplace violence?

At UCSF Health, we utilize The Joint Commission’s definition of workplace violence to define the range of acts and threats to be included and reported as workplace violence.  In addition, UCSF Health complies with Title 8, CCR, Section 3342 requirements for a Workplace Violence Prevention Program.

  • The Joint Commission accreditation manual’s Glossary now defines workplace violence as “An act or threat occurring at the workplace that can include any of the following: verbal, nonverbal, written, or physical aggression; threatening, intimidating, harassing, or humiliating words or actions; bullying; sabotage; sexual harassment; physical assaults; or other behaviors of concern involving staff, licensed practitioners, patients, or visitors.”
  • Cal-OSHA defines workplace violence as:
    • “Workplace violence” means any act of violence or threat of violence that occurs at the work site. The term workplace violence shall not include lawful acts of self-defense or defense of others. Workplace violence includes the following:
      • (A) The threat or use of physical force against an employee that results in, or has a high likelihood of resulting in, injury, psychological trauma, or stress, regardless of whether the employee sustains an injury;
      • (B) An incident involving the threat or use of a firearm or other dangerous weapon, including the use of common objects as weapons, regardless of whether the employee sustains an injury
