UCSF Medical Professional Liability Insurance Information Sheet

 

From July 1, 1983 to October 31, 1997, all physicians and staff were covered by:

 

UC Regents Self Insured Program*

All physicians and staff were insured by the Regents of the University of California:

  • for approved activities performed within the course and scope of University employment at the Parnassus Campus, Mount Zion Hospital, San Francisco General Hospital, and Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
  • when working at other approved sites, within the course and scope of UCSF employment, with the written approval from the UCSF Department Chair and a validly issued certificate of insurance, or approved written agreements/contracts. Contact Risk Management for a certificate  request form. Certificates of insurance must be issued prior to activity.
  • for approved research, teaching, and School of Medicine activities, within the course and scope of UCSF employment.

 

Coverage limits were $5 million per occurrence; no aggregate amount.  There was no policy number. Coverage was concurrent with employment.

 

From November 1, 1997 to March 31, 2000, UCSF Stanford Healthcare (“USHC” - merger between  UCSF Medical Center, UCSF/Mount Zion, Stanford, & Lucille Packard Children’s Hospitals), all  physicians and staff may have been covered by one or both (UC) plans, depending on the type of  activity:

 

Medical Professional Liability Insurance Company, Inc. (MPLIC)

Physicians and staff performing clinical activities in the service of UCSF Stanford Healthcare were insured by this captive insurance company when:

  • The clinical activities were within the course and scope of employment on behalf of USHC
  • The activities were performed in good faith and
  • The income generated from the clinical activities flowed into the USHC clinical compensation plan.

 

Coverage limits are $5 million per occurrence; $5 million aggregate.  The policy number corresponds to the USHC fiscal year, e.g. GP001-1999 (9/1/98 – 9/1/99); GP001-2000

(9/1/99 – 3/31/00). Coverage was concurrent with employment.

 

After April 1, 2000 (dissolution of USHC) to present, all physicians and staff are only covered by:

 

*UC Regents Self Insured Program

The University of California Regents Self-Insurance Program provides occurrence-based coverage for approved activities within the course and scope of employment.  The self-insured retention varies, but coverage always meets the industry standard, currently $1,000,000 per occurrence; $3,000,000 aggregate. There is no policy number. Coverage is concurrent with employment.
